Success Spaghetti - A Spell to Boost Luck & Draw Fortune
Originally published November 13, 2023, on Tumblr.
We all need a boost sometimes. Whether you're looking for a general spell for success in your life or for something to bolster your luck in another working, this recipe gets the job done.
Note that this recipe is primarily for the spaghetti sauce. It can be simmered for much longer than the times listed, which are considered minimum times. The longer it cooks, the more incorporated the flavors will be. Just be sure to stir regularly!
Like most of my spell recipes, this one is best used in a group setting. Depending on your portion sizes, this should make enough for four people to have a healthy helping each. See my notes below for magical applications.
Ingredients:
- 1 Yellow Onion, diced
- 6 to 8 Garlic Cloves, diced
- 1 16-oz. Can Tomato Sauce
- Approx. 1 t Salt (or to taste)
- Approx. 1/2 t Black Pepper (or to taste)
- 2 t Dried Basil, or 2 T Fresh Basil, finely chopped
- 1 t Dried Oregano, or 1 T Fresh Oregano, finely chopped
- 1/8 t Fennel Seeds, crushed
- 1/2 c Pecorino Romano Cheese (or to taste, I often do more)
- Garlic Powder & Onion Powder to taste, if necessary
Instructions:
- Saute the diced onion over medium-low heat until translucent and just starting to brown.
- Add garlic and saute, stirring constantly, until fragrant. This should only take 30 seconds.
- Pour in your tomato sauce and add your salt and pepper. Don't over-salt here; the cheese is very salty! Err on the side of bland until after you add the cheese. Let the sauce come to a gentle simmer.
- Add your basil, oregano, and fennel. Stir well.
- Let the sauce stew for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring frequently. If the bubbles spit everywhere, partially cover with a lid or cartouche.
- Taste your sauce. If needed, add garlic and/or onion powder. I often end up adding more garlic, because I like it.
- Add the cheese and stir well.
- Let the sauce stew for at least 15 more minutes.
- Taste at the 15 minute mark. Season as necessary.
- When ready, cook the spaghetti (or other pasta, per your preferences) according to package instructions for an al dente finish.
- Toss the pasta in your sauce. Top with more cheese and enjoy!
Recipe Notes:
- I don't like Parmesan. There, I said it! I don't. That's why I use pecorino romano cheese instead. You can use whichever you prefer or a blend of both.
- Trust me on the fennel seeds. If you've never had fennel in a tomato sauce, this is going to change your entire life. My mom taught me this trick, and I'll never make pasta sauce without it now. If you dislike the taste of licorice or are fennel-shy, you really only need five or six seeds for a light flavor. Trust me. Put the seeds in there.
- This is derived from my mom's all-day sauce. You can stew this for hours and get a really deep flavor or cook it just long enough to let the flavors mingle. Either way, get a little pasta cooking water in there when transferring your pasta into the sauce to thicken it up and give it a boost of salt and starch.
Magic Notes:
- Use this spell to attract general success, draw in money, promote richness in your life, or protect opportunities that come your way. It's multi-purpose and very effective. While cooking, decide what you want it to work towards. If you have a specific goal (like NaNoWriMo, for example), make that your focus.
- Basil is one of those must-have herbs. Here, it's our success aspect -- the thing that draws in money, wealth, and promising outcomes. Top your bowl of pasta with extra fresh leaves for an extra money kick.
- Oregano is one of my favorite herbs, hands down. It has associations of happiness and family, making this an ideal addition to a spell like this. Money spells (like all magic) follow the path of least resistance. Including something like oregano helps to assure that the path it chooses will be a pleasant one, untouched by grief, loss, or unfortunate circumstances.
- Cheese, in general, is the thing that promotes richness. It has to age for the right flavor. Romano has a very pungent scent and flavor which I love dearly (it's one of my favorite cheeses). It offers associations of positive outcomes and transformation. The cheese takes your current situation and helps to transform it into a more favorable one using the supporting cast -- the herbs, salt, and so forth.
- Tomatoes represent so many things. Depending on the variety, they might correspond to love, protection, or prosperity. Grape or other bunching tomatoes in particular associate to abundance in my practice. The tomato sauce here is the base, the foundation of the spell. It absorbs the flavors and powers of the other ingredients, wrapping them all into a prosperous, delicious package.
- The fennel isn't just the secret ingredient for flavor (though it is delicious). Fennel is a protective element. It complements the other flavors present and keeps the spell from backfiring or failing. I also use it to protect the opportunities coming my way from petering out or from outside influence. Nothing's worse than casting a spell successfully only to have it thwarted by someone else's competing efforts!
- As mentioned above, this spell is best used in a group setting. Between the oregano and tomatoes, it offers success and opportunity to everyone who partakes. I'm of the opinion that food magic (in particular, but also other types of magic) is accelerated and amplified when shared. Make a big batch and dole out servings to promote success of a shared project or goal.
- You can use this as a main dish or a side to supplement another food magic working's success. Serve with a salad topped with a refreshing vinaigrette for cleansing, healing, and growth. Pair with red wine for a successful romance.
